Guillem and Cati’s Residence / TEd’A arquitectes

Textual content description supplied by the architects. Pay probably the most consideration to the setting. “Som on som” (We’re the place we’re), wrote Perejaume in Paraules Locals, with a devilish play on the verb “be”.”

Our first concern was to search out the fitting place for the constructing and the house it freed up. Modify the stability between the home and the courtyard. To grasp that they complement one another -one just isn’t the residual house left over by the opposite, nor vice versa- and that occupied house and open house interact in a mutual suggestions dynamic. Reformulate the courtyard with a conventional typology. Uncover the open-ended courtyard as a metamorphosis of the traditional central courtyard. Embody a courtyard/lane as a variation that serves each room in the home.

The allotment is the final plot in a sequence with comparable dimensions -roughly 20m deep with a 10m frontage- and proportions, all with celebration partitions and laid out with the buildings set on the south facet dealing with the avenue and the courtyards dealing with north. These patios are thus shaded and damp, with no direct daylight for a lot of the 12 months.

This can be a nook plot, which we use to our benefit. The home is essentially set on the perimeters of the plot, with no potential setbacks. For that reason, it doesn’t comply with the standard mannequin, laid out alongside the quick course of the plot to generate some house in entrance and on the rear. As a substitute, it’s set within the longest course of the plot, on the facet road. This frees up a courtyard/lane between the brand new home and the wall shared with the neighbor.

The home is thus elongated, with the rooms positioned one after the opposite in a traditional enfilade. This technique offers every house with cross-ventilation between the road and the patio, and every room is straight associated to the patio, making use of a chunk of it.

The room construction and the bearer construction are coincident. Every room is bounded by 4 load-bearing partitions. These partitions are made from pressed concrete blocks, a typical, economical materials. All of the rooms are modulated by the block dimensions (20x20x40cm), in each the plan and part. The blocks and the beams that kind the horizontal construction are left uncovered. The lintels are additionally uncovered and every electrical part is positioned rigorously. The outer wall, with rests on a plinth and is duly linked to the interior layer, is made out of 20 and 15-cm thick sandstone (the native stone that defines the island’s constructed panorama). A heavy façade, with excessive inertia. That is once more an power and local weather technique.
